Northern Foods, a member of the Employers' Alliance for Work-Life Balance, has introduced a range of flexible working policies across all its companies, including paternity leave, flexible shift-working, compassionate leave, and, at one or two sites, after school clubs. Park Cakes in Oldham offers a subsidy to employees using a local nursery and out of school holiday club, reducing the need for staff to use their leave to look after children, a policy that has reduced absenteeism during school holiday periods.

Basic Connections is a call centre established in 1994 by two Directors, each of whom had young families. Implementing a flexible working policy which is used by 51% of the staff, individuals enjoy the flexibility to decide on their days and working hours. Many cannot arrive before 9.30am as they have to take children to school. They may also need to leave at 2.45pm and only work during term time. Extended leave can be taken during school holidays. Home working is available where appropriate.
