Nobody else has had your exact life experiences.
They are unique to you.
They are what make you unique, interesting and valuable to an employer.
Most of us tend to judge ourselves or compare ourselves, our achievements, our experience to others. When changing jobs or returning to the workforce this is tantamount to self sabotage!
The answer is simple. Use all of your life experiences as proof of your ability. These are called your transferable skills. Make factual statements about your unique qualities and experiences in both your CV and at Interview. Then back them up with a specific example, a case study or a project
overview, from your history, life and work. It says, I am not only saying I can offer this, I can prove it.
I call it the statement + proof rule, anyone can make a statement, but when you provide proof or
evidence then you will be noticed and credible.
Do Something Different!
I recently had a client who applied for an unusual job in Noosa, QLD and had been out of the mainstream workforce for many years, In fact she was a grandmother whose only event
management had been her childrens weddings and charity events!
It came with an apartment, access to a boat and plenty of holiday time.
You guessed it, they received hundreds of applications.
The owner wanted someone with exceptional General Management skill, but as they entertained clients a lot also wanted advanced Event Coordination expertise.
My candidate, did all the usual things but then, cooked up a variety of scrumptious appetisers, attached a detailed menu with options, costings and venue suggestions for a party of 20. She
popped it all in an esky and express posted it.
Did she get their attention - she sure did
She was on trial within 2 weeks and was offered the role!
Every role is a little different, but the principle is the same, stand out from
other applicants by proving your ability to apply your life experience,
professionalism and initiative.
